Dear all,

Welcome back! A new year marks the start of a new beginning which brings forth fresh hope and renewed enthusiasm for a great 2020. It has been a year since I joined the NorthLight School and I am very blessed to be a part of this caring family.

Passionate & Professional Staff

Since its establishment in 2007, NorthLight School has sought to prepare students for life and living, anchored on our ‘SHINE’ school values of Sincerity, Honesty, Integrity, Networking (partnership) and Excellence. I am thankful to be working alongside a capable team of teaching and non-teaching staff with sparkle in their eyes to ignite the joy of learning, passion in their hearts to inspire hope, and fire in their bellies to relentlessly care for and nurture our students into future-ready youths.

Celebrating Successes

In NorthLight, we ignite possibilities by encouraging all NorthLight students to explore their potential and achieve their personal best in all aspects of school life. In 2019, our Sepak Takraw students overcame all challenges to emerge First Runner-Up at the National Schools Games, our Hospitality Services students clinched the Championship title at the APS Baking Fiesta and a group of talented students with a passion for visual arts exhibited their works in an art exhibition at the URA Gallery. It is so heartening to see them developing creativity, confidence and resilience as we take them through an enriching NorthLight experience.

Cultivating Appreciation & Social Skills

As we usher in a new year, we would like to cultivate in our students the habit of being appreciative for all the good things that happen in their lives. Even when they face challenges, they can be grateful for the people who continue to give them love and support. Research has found that people who regularly practise gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things that they are thankful for experience more positive emotions, express more compassion and kindness, and are more resilient in stressful times. We will also be placing more emphasis on the teaching of social skills, which are an integral part of functioning in society. Displaying good manners, communicating effectively with others, being considerate of the feelings of others and expressing personal needs are all important components of social skills.

School Improvements & Plans

Providing a conducive and vibrant learning environment that support students’ learning is important. Some improvements made in 2019 included the air-conditioning of the Multi-Purpose Hall, renovation of our Shine hotel (for Hospitality Services) as well as the Love-of-Literacy Room, which is our English Department resource centre. Moving ahead, we will look into the provision of more learning spaces for students to explore their creative talents and to build their mental and physical resilience.
In addition, there will be more opportunities for our students to embark on out-of-classroom learning such as camps and overseas trips. Such opportunities allow our students to actively think for themselves, improve their personal development, such as confidence, self-esteem, leadership and independent thinking as well as forge stronger bonds with their schoolmates and teachers.

Looking Forward

Last but not least, I would like to thank our board of directors and partners who believe in doing the best for our students and provide the resources and learning opportunities to nurture them into young adults who have a passion for learning and for life. As one family, we shall bring NorthLight to greater heights in the coming years. Let’s continue to work together and guide our STARS to take on the world!

Yours sincerely,

Mdm Sung Mee Har
