ITE SKILLS CERTIFICATE IN RETAIL OPERATIONS

Course Objective
This course aims to equip students with the requisite skills and knowledge in supermarket operations, merchandise display, point-of-sale operations and customer service relevant to the supermarket retailing sector.

Core Modules
There are 5 core modules in the Retail Operations course. The 5 core modules are :

  • Basic Customer Service
  • Merchandise Display
  • Supermarket Operations
  • Point-of-Sale Operations
  • Industrial Attachment

Module Objective

  • TS20020 – Basic Customer Service
  • Students are trained to provide basic customer service involving the use of communication skills over the telephone and through face-to-face contact, and to carry out service recovery.

  • TS20040 – Merchandise Display
  • Students are trained to prepare display units, prepare merchandise for display and to display offer and normal merchandise.

    Merchandise

  • TS20030 – Supermarket Operations
  • Students are trained to use the appropriate forms to receive, return and write-off merchandise. They will also be trained to conduct stock-take as well as to handle store security and emergencies.

  • Students are trained to set up cash register, handle various modes of payment, refunds, and requests for home delivery and perform end- of-day closing.

Elective Modules

  • Basic Retail Selling Skills

    On completion of the module, students should be able to develop an attitude that selling should result in a benefit or gain to the customers. They should be able to assist the customers in making a wise buying decision and apply effective closing techniques.

  • Basic Gift Wrapping and Floral Arrangement

    On completion of the module, students should be able to acquire the basic knowledge and skills in gift wrapping & floral arrangement. They should also be able to understand different types of tools & materials and their applications.

  • Office Technology

    On completion of the module, students should be able to produce office documents using word processing. They should also be able to perform basic office works such as housekeeping, duplicating & disposing documents, filing documents, handling mail, stationery control and application of correct telephone technique.

  • Working in the Retail Industry

    On completion of the module, students should be able to gain a retail industry perspective. They should also be able to understand what is retailing and appreciate the role of retailing in Singapore and how retailing affects them as individuals and as customers.

Taster Module in Retail Operations (Basic Retail Skills)
The taster module in Retail Operations aims to provide students with some exposures to the skills and knowledge relevant to what they will be learning when taking full Retail Operations course in year 3. Students will have the opportunity to acquire some basic skills in customer service, merchandise display supermarket operations and point of sale operations, including basic safety and housekeeping.

Industrial Attachment

The main objective of this attachment programme is to provide students with a realistic industrial exposure. Whenever possible, students must ask questions and take the initiative to do things. Students must be observant to see how things learnt in classrooms are applied.

Industrial Attachment Skills Task List

To provide students with an opportunity to gain real work exposures in a retail environment (eg. Supermarket). The company is requested to assign students work scope to students covering at least 75%, namely 8 of the 12 tasks listed below:
