The New Media Club took part in the Samsung Sports Media Challenge 2010 whereby the team:
  • Report on sports-related activities
  • Manage and edit/produce content that appears in their respective school groups
  • Share the sporting spirit!

We came in as the top 5 schools and received a Merit Award Winner of the Samsung Sports Media Challenge 2010, Secondary School / JC Category.

The team members are:
  1. Kevin Nonis - 3FP1
  2. Shawn Anthony Nathan - 3RO3
  3. Nur Masturina Bte Suraimi - 3FP2
  4. Danial Mikael Suhairi - 2S3
  5. Hargobind Singh Panju s/o R S - 2A3

It was sure an exciting and fun-filled challenge that provided the members to showcase their skills as presenters and put the knowledge acquired during their ICT lesson to very good use. The 5 students also attended a workshop conducted by the organizers to better equip themselves for this challenge. As part of this main challenge, the New Media Club also submitted entries for the YOG Sports Presenter Competition. It is very heartening that Lee Chuan Jie of 4RO1 was one of the three winners of the YOG Sports Presenters Competition. He also attended training by Starhub to hone his skills as a sports presenter. In his sms he expressed, “I had a lot of fun being part of the YOG Sports Presenters team. I enjoyed sharing with the whole world on the YOG village with my buddy. Everything was cool and steady."

The New Media Club was involved in the production of audio CDs for students from the Lighthouse school, which was a joint project by NIE trainee teachers and NorthLight. About 8 of us from the New Media Club were involved in this project.
Light House

The Lighthouse is the school for the visually handicapped. The school provides education to students who are partially blind to total blindness. Here the students don’t use the print that we use to recognize the English alphabet. Instead, they use the Braille form where few dots put together represent a letter.

A special printing machine which costs about $67,000 had to be imported from Norway to print their textbooks. One text in Braille is three times thicker than the textbook in print. There is only one machine and it was very generously donated by the then Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in 1996.

The type writing machine is used as a form of writing tool by the totally blind students. Each machine costs about $10 000 to $12 000. The totally blind students use their sense of touch to identify the letters in Braille and read. Amazingly, these students use this sense of touch to study for their PSLE.

The students and the NIE trainees met almost every Tuesdays and sometimes on Thursday. In total, we prepared a total of 3 stories for the students. Three audio books are:

  • The Goat, the Duck, the Goose and the Cock (Enid Blyton)
  • Billy Up the Tree (Enid Blyton)
  • Helping the Police (Barbara Mitchell)
On 3 February 2010, we had the CDs presentation ceremony at Lighthouse.

Feedback from the students:

This project definitely opened our eyes to the many challenges the visually handicapped students face and how they manage their disability. We are indeed very happy to help these students. It sure was a privileged to be given the opportunity to use our voice to help and support them. We have learnt to be more appreciative of life and what we have. We understood that we can also provide support and give back to the community in our small way. On the whole, we enjoyed the whole production and the thought of having contributed to the production of the audio CDs gave us a sense of unexplainable joy.

Through this project, we learnt to see life and the problems that we face in a different light. We may have failed once or twice academically or have a lot of problems in our life that could be causing us much pain and suffering, but these are nothing compared to the challenges the Lighthouse school students face every minute in their daily lives. We have realized that the one and main obstacle in our life is the big “ME”. Instead of comparing ourselves to the more fortunate people, thinking of the lesser fortunate sure will help us consider our problems small and appreciate life even more.

This is the feedback from our own teacher:

The project was definitely a very meaningful and self–fulfilling one. It sure gave the students an opportunity to exhibit their level of confidence and competence in the English Language. It was an eye opener to the challenges faced by the visually handicapped students. The project added value and meaning to their experiences and school life, increasing their self worth.

This is what the principal of Lighthouse has to say:

I would like to thank the group members for all the efforts and facilitation. Similarly, my many thanks to the Principal, teachers and students of Northlight School for this meaningful and wonderful collaboration.

This is what one of the trainee teachers has to say:

At first, I was not familiar with the Northlight students, and they did not give me much attention. I overcame this issue by showing them that I am sincere in making friends with them and coming together with them to do this meaningful activity of recording these audio books together.
